Severe Head Injuries Could Double Risk of Brain Tumors, Study Finds

New research suggests that moderate to severe head trauma could increase the risk of developing a malignant brain tumor later in life. Scientists tracked 150,000 adults with no known cancer risk factors and found that those with significant traumatic brain injuries were more likely to be diagnosed with a tumor within three to five years. Mild injuries, like concussions, did not show the same link.

Doctors say the findings highlight the need for long-term monitoring after major head injuries. Brain tumors such as glioblastoma are among the deadliest cancers, often diagnosed late and tied to symptoms like headaches, memory loss, vision changes, and personality shifts.

Although the overall risk is still low, researchers warn that serious brain injuries should be viewed as a long-term health concern, not just a short-term recovery issue. Experts advise anyone with a history of severe head trauma to be vigilant about neurological symptoms and seek medical attention early.
