Could Your Morning Coffee Weaken Antibiotics?

Everyday food and drink choices may play a bigger role in antibiotic effectiveness than many realize. A new study from Germany found that common ingredients — including caffeine — can interfere with how certain antibiotics work by changing how bacteria regulate what enters and leaves their cells.

Researchers tested 94 substances, from foods to medications, on E. coli. They discovered that caffeine triggered a chain reaction inside the bacteria, altering transport proteins and reducing how much of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin the bacteria absorbed. This made the drug less effective. Interestingly, the same effect was not seen in Salmonella, showing that even similar bacteria may respond differently.

Experts say this points to a new form of “low-level” resistance, one not driven by traditional resistance genes but by environmental factors like diet. The findings suggest doctors may need to consider not just which antibiotic to prescribe, but also what foods, drinks, or medications patients are consuming during treatment.
