Breakthrough Drug Shows Major Promise for Fatty Liver Disease

A new treatment could change the outlook for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a severe type of fatty liver disease tied to obesity and Type 2 diabetes. The experimental drug, called ION224, blocks a liver enzyme that drives fat buildup and inflammation — the key causes of liver damage.

In a trial with 160 adults, monthly injections of ION224 improved liver health for 60% of patients at the highest dose. These improvements happened even without weight loss. The drug was also well tolerated, with no serious side effects reported. Experts say it is the first therapy designed to directly stop the disease process, rather than just manage symptoms.

MASH is often called a “silent” disease because it can progress for years without symptoms. It is now a leading cause of cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver transplants. With more than 100 million Americans affected by fatty liver disease, researchers believe ION224 could become a much-needed treatment if larger Phase III trials confirm its safety and effectiveness.
