Can the Temperature of Your Food Affect Your Health?

A new study suggests that hot or cold meals may influence both mental and digestive health. Researchers found that cold drinks, especially in summer, were tied to higher anxiety, poor sleep, and feelings of fullness. In contrast, people who drank more hot beverages in winter reported better sleep, fewer gut problems, and lower depression.

The research followed more than 400 adults across the U.S., making it the first American study to link food and drink temperature to these health outcomes. The findings mirror ideas from traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, which have long warned against too many cold foods or drinks.

The effects were strongest in people with poor circulation, such as those with consistently cold hands. Experts say more studies are needed, but simple swaps — like choosing warm tea instead of iced coffee — could support digestion, mood, and sleep.
