This Daily Habit May Age Your Brain Faster Than Time, Study Finds

A new study from Karolinska Institute suggests that bad sleep habits may speed up brain aging more than time itself. Researchers analyzed brain scans from 27,500 adults and found that people with poor sleep had brains that appeared older than their actual age.

Using MRI and machine learning, the team compared biological brain age to chronological age. They discovered that every drop in sleep quality made the brain look about six months older. On average, poor sleepers showed brains that looked a full year older. Scientists believe chronic inflammation, poor waste clearance in the brain, and cardiovascular strain may explain the link.

The good news is that sleep is a habit you can improve. Researchers say better rest could help preserve brain health and lower the risk of cognitive decline. While the study relied on self-reported data and healthier-than-average participants, the message is clear: making sleep a priority may be one of the best ways to keep your brain younger for longer.
