Experts Urge Caution as Gabapentin Prescriptions Continue to Rise

Gabapentin, once used mainly for seizures, is now one of the most prescribed drugs in America. A new CDC-backed study in Annals of Internal Medicine shows prescriptions have more than doubled in the last decade, making it the fifth most dispensed medication in 2024.

The research tracked data from 2010 to 2024 and found prescriptions rose from about 79.5 per 1,000 people to 177.6 per 1,000. The number of individuals receiving gabapentin also jumped, from 18.9 to 46.9 per 1,000. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants showed the steepest growth, reflecting their expanding prescribing authority in many states.

Experts caution that while gabapentin helps with seizures and nerve pain, it isn’t risk-free. Reports of misuse, sedation, and dependence are growing. Researchers stress that as use continues to climb, prescribers need to monitor patients carefully and weigh the benefits against potential harms.
