The Everyday Pills That Could Be Harming Your Gut

A new study suggests that common medications — including antibiotics, antidepressants, and heart drugs — may have lasting effects on gut health. Researchers found that many of these drugs can alter the gut microbiome, the community of bacteria that supports digestion, immunity, and metabolism.

Published in ASM Journals, the large population study analyzed stool samples and prescription data from more than 2,500 adults. Nearly 90% of the 186 drugs tested were linked to measurable changes in gut bacteria. The biggest disruptions came from antibiotics, acid-reducing medications, antidepressants, and certain cardiovascular drugs. These shifts often built up over time and, in some cases, persisted years after people stopped taking the medications.

Experts say the findings highlight how sensitive the gut microbiome is — and how pharmaceuticals may play a bigger role in shaping it than previously thought. Since gut balance affects everything from mood to metabolism, researchers say it’s critical to understand these long-term effects. They recommend future studies on how to protect gut health, especially for people who take multiple prescriptions over time.
