The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has broadened its warning over lead contamination in ground cinnamon. Sixteen brands are now flagged as unsafe, including HAETAE, Roshni, Durra, and Wise Wife. Prolonged use of contaminated products may raise blood lead levels, a serious concern especially for children.
Lead can harm brain development, lower IQ, and cause behavior and learning problems in kids. In adults, it’s linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney damage. The FDA is urging consumers to check spice cabinets and throw out recalled products. Some affected companies have issued voluntary recalls, but not all have complied.
Contamination can come from soil, processing, storage, or packaging. The FDA is investigating the source following past lead incidents involving cinnamon in applesauce. Because there is no safe level of lead, the agency recommends buying spices from trusted brands and staying alert to updates on its website.
