Protein shakes and powders are more popular than ever, but new testing shows they may not be as healthy as they seem. A Consumer Reports investigation found that more than two-thirds of 23 popular protein products contained unsafe levels of lead. Some had up to 10 times more lead than experts say is safe to consume in a single day. Plant-based powders were the most contaminated, while dairy-based options performed slightly better but still showed issues.
Lead exposure builds up over time and can damage the brain, heart, and kidneys. Even small amounts may cause high blood pressure, fatigue, and learning problems in children. While companies often claim that trace metals come from soil or natural ingredients, experts warn that daily exposure — especially from supplements used every day — can become dangerous.
A few brands, including Optimum Nutrition, Momentous, and Owyn, tested safer for regular use. Experts recommend choosing protein products that are third-party tested for heavy metals and remembering that real food is still the best source of protein. Eggs, meat, beans, nuts, and dairy naturally provide the nutrients your body needs without the hidden risks.
