What Really Happens When You Skip Breakfast

New research adds weight to the idea that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. A review of nine studies published in Nutrients found that people who skip breakfast have a higher risk of metabolic syndrome — a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abdominal obesity that raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 118,000 people and found that skipping breakfast was linked to higher rates of high blood pressure, poor cholesterol levels, and blood sugar problems. The findings suggest that missing breakfast may disrupt the body’s natural rhythms and impair how it processes nutrients, leading to long-term metabolic damage.

Experts stress that skipping breakfast is not the same as structured intermittent fasting, which is intentional and often paired with healthy habits. Instead, skipping breakfast is usually part of an unbalanced eating pattern that can lead to overeating later in the day. Eating regular, balanced meals — especially a nutrient-rich breakfast — may help stabilize metabolism and reduce the risk of chronic disease.
