Scientists in Malaysia discovered that Bidara leaves may be one of the most effective natural sources for fighting germs. In a study published in Scientific Reports, researchers tested different parts of the Ziziphus mauritiana plant, known locally as Bidara or Indian jujube. They found that leaf extracts worked better against bacteria and fungi than the bark, roots, stems, or fruit.
The team tested how well each plant part stopped the growth of E. coli and Fusarium solani. The leaf extracts showed the strongest germ-fighting ability, almost matching the performance of some antibiotics. Root extracts also worked well against fungi, while other parts of the plant had weaker results.
Researchers say these findings suggest Bidara leaves could be a natural alternative for fighting infections. However, the results are based only on lab tests. More studies are needed to confirm their safety and effectiveness in people before they can be used for medical purposes.
