How Just 3 Drinks a Day Can Damage Your Brain Over Time

Having that third drink each day might do more than hurt your liver — it could speed up how your brain ages. New research found that people who drink three or more alcoholic drinks a day tend to have strokes about 11 years earlier than lighter drinkers. Heavy drinking was also linked to more brain damage, slower recovery, and a higher risk of long-term memory problems.

Researchers looked at more than 1,600 adults who had a type of bleeding stroke. Heavy drinkers — those who had three or more drinks a day — had strokes at an average age of 64, compared to 75 for people who drank less. Their brain bleeds were 70% larger and more likely to spread into fluid-filled spaces in the brain, which makes recovery harder. Scans also showed more white matter damage, which is tied to thinking and memory decline.

The study can’t prove alcohol directly causes this damage, but experts say the link between drinking, high blood pressure, and blood vessel damage is strong. Cutting back on alcohol may help protect your brain, lower stroke risk, and slow aging. The takeaway: moderation matters. Limiting alcohol to fewer than three drinks a day — or saving it for special occasions — could help keep your brain healthier for years to come.
