More than 250,000 cases of shredded cheese have been recalled after federal regulators warned the products may contain small metal fragments. The cheese was sold under several familiar store brands at major retailers and shipped to more than 30 states and Puerto Rico. While the risk of severe injury is considered low, the recall is broad and still active.
Regulators classified the recall as a Class II event, meaning the products could cause temporary or reversible health problems. The issue was traced to raw ingredients used in manufacturing, and stores began removing the cheese in early October. Because many packages were sold under different private-label brands, consumers may not realize they have a recalled item in their homes.
People who bought shredded cheese from national chains during the recall period are urged to check lot numbers and throw out any affected products. Even tiny metal fragments can injure the mouth or digestive tract, especially in children and older adults. With no public statement yet from the manufacturer, officials advise avoiding the recalled cheese and following FDA guidance while the investigation continues.
