Indoor Tanning Linked to Much Higher Melanoma Risk

New research shows that indoor tanning is strongly linked to a much higher risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. People who used tanning beds were nearly three times more likely to develop melanoma than those who did not. This increased risk remained even after accounting for age, sun exposure and family history.

Unlike natural sunlight, which usually affects only exposed skin, tanning beds damage nearly the entire skin surface. Scientists found that skin cells from tanning bed users carried far more DNA mutations tied to melanoma. These mutations appeared even in areas of the body that are normally protected from the sun, showing that tanning beds cause widespread genetic damage.

The findings help explain why melanoma linked to indoor tanning often appears at younger ages and in unexpected places on the body. Researchers say the results support stronger warnings, tighter regulation of tanning beds and increased skin cancer screening for people who used indoor tanning earlier in life.
