Weight Loss Drugs Face Lawsuits Linked to Vision Loss

A federal judicial panel has ordered that lawsuits claiming vision loss linked to popular weight loss drugs be combined into a new federal case. The lawsuits involve patients who say they suffered partial or complete loss of eyesight after using injectable medications commonly prescribed for diabetes and weight management.

The claims center on a rare eye condition caused by reduced blood flow to the optic nerve, which can lead to permanent blindness. Judges said these cases rely on different medical evidence than existing lawsuits over digestive side effects, such as nausea or stomach paralysis. Because of that, the vision-related claims will follow a separate legal path while remaining under the same court’s oversight.

Dozens of vision-loss cases are already pending in both federal and state courts, and more lawsuits are expected. The legal action follows recent research suggesting a possible link between these medications and optic nerve damage. As use of weight loss drugs continues to grow, the cases add to increasing scrutiny over their long-term safety.
