High-Fat Diet Found to Reprogram Liver Cells Toward Cancer

A high-fat diet may do more than strain the liver. New research shows it can change liver cells in ways that make cancer more likely over time. Scientists found that long-term exposure to fatty foods can cause mature liver cells to lose their specialized functions and shift into a more primitive, stem-like state. While this helps cells survive ongoing stress, it also increases the risk that they become cancerous.

As fat builds up in the liver, cells turn on genes that promote survival and growth while shutting down genes needed for normal liver work, such as metabolism and protein processing. This allows damaged cells to keep dividing instead of dying. Over time, this process creates an environment where harmful mutations are more likely to develop.

Researchers saw the same pattern in human liver samples. Lower activity of normal liver genes and higher markers of immature cells were linked to poorer outcomes once cancer formed. Scientists believe these changes happen slowly, often over many years, increasing cancer risk long before symptoms appear. The findings highlight the importance of reducing long-term metabolic stress to help protect the liver from cancer.
