New Year’s Resolutions May Also Improve Sleep

As people head into the New Year with resolutions to eat better and exercise more, new research suggests these habits may also improve something many struggle with during the holidays: sleep. A national survey finds that diet and physical activity play a meaningful role in how well people rest, beyond their impact on weight or fitness.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s 2025 survey of more than 2,000 adults, nearly six in 10 people said a balanced diet helped them sleep better. Regular movement mattered as well, with many reporting improved sleep after both morning and evening exercise. Younger adults were especially likely to notice better rest when nutrition and activity were consistent, pointing to a strong link between daily habits and sleep quality.

The findings highlight sleep as a core part of overall health, tied closely to metabolic, mental and cardiovascular outcomes. Experts recommend maintaining a regular sleep schedule, staying active, eating whole foods and limiting screen time before bed. Framing sleep as part of a broader lifestyle reset — rather than an afterthought — may help New Year’s resolutions last well beyond January.
