The Lawsuit Firestorm Hitting America’s Biggest Weight Loss Trend

Some weight-loss drugs aren’t just slimming waistlines — they may also be fueling a fast-growing wave of serious injury claims. Thousands of lawsuits now allege popular GLP-1 injections caused devastating complications that patients say they were never properly warned about, including life-altering digestive damage and sudden vision loss.

At least 4,400 cases have been filed since 2023, targeting major manufacturers of GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. The lawsuits describe severe outcomes including gastroparesis, often called “stomach paralysis,” along with ileus, a bowel shutdown where muscles stop moving waste through the body.

Plaintiffs also allege intestinal obstruction, severe constipation, and fecal impaction, gallbladder injuries requiring surgery, and extreme vomiting, acid reflux and abdominal pain that sometimes led to repeated hospitalizations — with some cases describing catastrophic emergencies such as colon rupture.

Drugmakers dispute the allegations and say the safety profile is well-established, while the legal battles could take years to play out. But the claims highlight a growing concern: drugs designed to slow digestion may also push the body beyond its limits, especially when used widely for weight loss.

Some plaintiffs also allege sudden blindness or major vision changes, including a rare optic nerve injury linked to NAION, sometimes described as an “eye stroke,” and at least one case has raised concerns about Wernicke’s encephalopathy, a serious brain dysfunction tied to vitamin B1 deficiency and malnutrition. For many patients, the real question is no longer whether these injections can suppress appetite — but whether the risks are being minimized while millions keep taking them.
