Blood Test May Spot Pancreatic Cancer Earlier

Pancreatic cancer is often discovered too late to stop it, but a new blood test suggests that may not always be the case. The disease is one of the deadliest cancers because early symptoms are rare and routine screening does not exist. By the time it is found, treatment options are limited and survival rates are low.

In a new study, researchers tested a blood-based panel that combines four proteins linked to pancreatic cancer. Two of the markers were already known but unreliable on their own, while two others were newly identified by analyzing stored blood samples. When used together, the panel accurately separated people with pancreatic cancer from those without it, including many cases in the earliest stages.

The test also distinguished cancer from noncancerous pancreatic conditions that often cause confusion during diagnosis. That ability is critical because inflammation and benign disease can mimic cancer in both symptoms and lab results. While more research is needed before it could be used broadly, the findings suggest blood screening for people at higher risk may one day help catch this cancer when treatment has the best chance to work.
