Losing weight often comes with an unintended side effect — a slowdown in metabolism and potential loss of muscle and bone mass. But new research published in Frontiers in Aging suggests a simple tool may help counter some of these effects. Researchers found that wearing a weighted vest during weight loss may help maintain bone mineral density and reduce metabolic slowdown, particularly in older adults.
In the study, participants wore weighted vests designed to replace the weight they had lost, typically for about eight hours per day. Researchers found that those who wore the vest and spent more time standing or moving experienced positive changes in bone density compared to those who lost weight without using the vest. Maintaining mechanical load on the body may help preserve bone strength as weight decreases.
Researchers say movement still plays an important role in the vest’s effectiveness. The added weight appears to provide benefits primarily when people remain upright and active rather than sedentary. While more research is underway, the findings suggest weighted vests may offer a practical strategy to help protect bone health and support metabolism during weight loss, especially as people age.
