Could Your Gut Hold the Key to Alzheimer’s Risk?

New research suggests Alzheimer’s disease may be linked not only to the brain but also to changes in the gut. Scientists found that a protein associated with Alzheimer’s, known as amyloid-β, can accumulate in both the brain and the digestive system, potentially disrupting communication between nerve cells and contributing to early symptoms.

In a recent study using a mouse model, researchers discovered that butyrate, a compound produced by beneficial gut bacteria when fiber is digested, helped reduce amyloid-β buildup. The treatment also lowered inflammation, protected nerve connections in the gut and prevented memory decline in the animals. These findings point to a possible gut-brain connection that may influence how the disease develops.

While the results are still preliminary and have not yet been confirmed in humans, researchers say the study highlights a potential new pathway for understanding and addressing Alzheimer’s disease. Supporting gut health and the production of beneficial compounds like butyrate may become an area of interest for future research aimed at slowing or preventing cognitive decline.
