Could Nature Be the Missing Link to a Healthier Diet?

Spending time in nature may do more than improve your mood — it could also influence what you eat. A new study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who spend more time outdoors are more likely to report healthier eating habits, including higher intake of fruits and vegetables.

Researchers surveyed 300 adults across the United States and examined how different types of nature exposure — such as being in parks, having plants nearby or simply interacting with outdoor environments — related to diet. Those who had more intentional or incidental contact with nature tended to have better overall diet quality and more sustainable eating patterns.

Participants also reported that time spent in nature helped reduce stress, anxiety and depression, which may play a role in healthier choices. Researchers say feeling more connected to nature can motivate people to prioritize their health, including what they eat. While more research is needed, the findings suggest that even simple activities like visiting a park or spending time outdoors could support both mental well-being and better dietary habits.
