Scientists Just Found a Hidden Defender Inside Your Gut

Scientists have identified a little-known protein in the gut that may play a powerful role in defending the body against harmful bacteria. The protein, called intelectin-2, appears to strengthen the gut’s protective barrier while also targeting and neutralizing invading microbes.

Researchers found that intelectin-2 works in two key ways. It helps reinforce the mucus lining of the gastrointestinal tract, which acts as a shield for intestinal tissue. If that barrier is compromised, the protein can also bind to bacteria, trapping and potentially breaking them down before they spread.

The discovery could open the door to new treatments for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and antibiotic-resistant infections. Scientists say harnessing this natural defense system may offer a new way to support gut health by working with the body’s own immune mechanisms rather than against them.
