Magnesium may play a critical role in how the body processes vitamin D, yet many people are not getting enough of it. Research suggests that nearly half of Americans are deficient in magnesium, a mineral required to activate enzymes involved in vitamin D metabolism.
In one study, participants who supplemented with magnesium — without taking additional vitamin D — were able to regulate their vitamin D levels. Those with low levels saw increases, while those with higher levels experienced a decrease, suggesting magnesium may help the body maintain balance rather than simply raising levels.
Experts say this interaction may explain why vitamin D supplements do not always lead to expected improvements. Without adequate magnesium, the body may struggle to properly utilize vitamin D, highlighting the importance of addressing multiple nutrients rather than relying on a single supplement.
