Are These "Forever Chemicals" More Dangerous Than We Thought?

For years, scientists have warned that PFAS, often called "forever chemicals," accumulate in the human body and the environment because they break down extremely slowly. Now, new research has uncovered another troubling concern. Researchers identified one specific PFAS compound, perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), and found it may interfere with normal fetal facial development by disrupting the body's handling of retinoic acid, a vitamin A–derived compound essential for early embryonic growth.

The study is significant because it moves beyond simply observing an association. Scientists identified the biological mechanism by which PFDA interferes with liver function, preventing the body from properly regulating retinoic acid during pregnancy. Animal studies found that even very small amounts of PFDA increased the risk of facial abnormalities, adding to growing evidence that PFAS can disrupt normal development at remarkably low levels. Researchers say the findings may help identify which of the thousands of PFAS chemicals pose the greatest health risks.

While pregnant women face particular concerns, PFAS exposure affects everyone. These persistent chemicals are commonly found in nonstick cookware, grease-resistant food packaging, stain-resistant fabrics, water-resistant clothing and contaminated drinking water. Reducing your toxic burden by replacing nonstick cookware, choosing fresh foods over packaged convenience foods, avoiding stain-resistant products and filtering your drinking water can help limit exposure. As Dr. Mercola has long emphasized, PFAS are only one part of a much larger "toxic soup," making it more important than ever to reduce unnecessary chemical exposures wherever possible.
