This Common Hormone Disorder Could Be Harming Your Heart

A hormone disorder once thought to affect mainly fertility may have much broader health implications. New research found that women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), had a substantially higher risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke than women without the condition. Researchers say many women remain undiagnosed, making awareness especially important.

PMOS affects hormones involved in ovulation and metabolism, but its impact extends well beyond the ovaries. The study found that women with the condition were more likely to develop cardiovascular problems, particularly when other metabolic risk factors such as high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar or excess weight were also present.

Rather than viewing PMOS as only a reproductive condition, it's important to recognize it as a sign that the body's metabolism may be out of balance. Supporting insulin sensitivity through a nutrient-dense diet, regular movement, restorative sleep and stress management can benefit both hormonal and cardiovascular health. Addressing these underlying factors may help protect not only reproductive wellness, but your heart for years to come.
