Could a Small Glass of This Give Your Mood a Lift?

A small new randomized trial suggests a simple addition to your day may have an unexpected effect on your mood. Researchers followed 42 adults who ate relatively little fruit and vegetables and found that participants who increased their intake while adding a daily glass of 100% fruit juice or a smoothie reported lower depression scores after four weeks.

Their scores were 2.52 points lower on a 27-point scale compared with the control group — a modest but statistically significant difference that researchers say deserves further investigation.

That doesn’t mean grabbing any bottle labeled “juice” will deliver the same result. If you choose juice, freshly squeezing whole fruit at home gives you control over exactly what goes into your glass, rather than relying on highly processed commercial products.

Better yet, keep the serving modest and don’t view juice as a replacement for whole fruit. In the study, participants drank just one glass while also increasing their intake of whole fruits and vegetables, and both intervention groups increased their estimated fiber intake by 8 to 10 grams per day.

The findings are intriguing because they add to the growing recognition that what you eat can influence much more than physical health. Researchers noted previous evidence linking citrus juice consumption with brain blood flow and cognitive function, although this four-week study was far too small to prove that fresh juice prevents or treats depression.

Think of a small glass of freshly squeezed juice as one possible addition to a nutrient-dense diet — not a sugary shortcut to better health. Your brain, metabolism and gut all respond to the quality of what you consume, and sometimes seemingly small food choices can have effects that reach well beyond the digestive tract.
