Can Your Mind Turn Down Inflammation?

Inflammation is usually thought of as something the body does automatically, but new research suggests your attention may have more influence than expected. In three experiments involving 57 healthy adults, researchers created a small, temporary inflammatory response in the skin.

When participants deliberately focused on sensations coming from the affected area instead of distracting themselves, nearly 90% experienced a smaller inflammatory response. On average, inflammation was about 1.5 times lower, and the response also returned toward baseline faster.

What makes this particularly interesting is that the effect wasn’t simply a matter of people feeling less discomfort. Researchers found evidence that attention influenced the inflammatory response itself through two pathways — signals traveling from the affected tissue and a top-down mechanism involving the brain.

The latter continued to have an effect even when researchers reduced sensory signals with a local anesthetic. It’s another intriguing example of the mind-body connection and how your nervous, immune and sensory systems are constantly communicating rather than operating independently.

This doesn’t mean you can think chronic inflammation away. The study examined short-term skin inflammation in healthy people, so researchers don’t yet know whether the same effect applies to chronic inflammatory conditions. Still, it offers another reason to make intentional mind-body practices part of your health routine.

Instead of automatically distracting yourself from every uncomfortable sensation, practices that encourage awareness of the body — such as meditation, slow breathing and quiet body scanning — may help strengthen the connection between your brain and body. Combined with good sleep, regular movement, healthy sun exposure and other strategies that support cellular health, learning to pay attention to your body may be more powerful than it sounds.
