Then there's where you started. An analysis of NHANES 2013–2016 data, cited in the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements magnesium fact sheet, found that 48% of Americans consume less magnesium from food and beverages than they need. Potassium is worse. So the sodium you lose on a June afternoon isn't the sodium you lose doing the same work in mid-August. The first hot week of the year is the one that flattens people, and the person who's been outside since May is running a different set of numbers than the neighbor who just started. Your losses aren't fixed. They're a moving target that heat itself moves in your favor, given a couple of weeks.
