What Your Aching Feet May Be Trying to Tell You

If you've spent years buying the same shoe size but still end up with pinching, rubbing or uncomfortable feet, the problem may not be your feet at all. A new study found that most women were wearing a shoe size that didn't match the size predicted by their foot length, while 68% reported at least one recurring problem with shoe fit.

The bigger issue may be width. Women with the same shoe size had differences of up to 1.6 inches around the widest part of their feet, yet most shoes are sold in just one width. Many women appeared to compensate by buying a larger size simply to get enough room across the foot, which means the shoe may become too long while still failing to properly match the shape of the foot.

The next time you shop for shoes, don't assume the number you've worn for years tells the whole story. Pay attention to width, toe room and the actual shape of your foot, and remember that sizing can vary considerably between brands. A properly fitting shoe shouldn't require your feet to adapt to it — the shoe should accommodate your feet.
