Could One of Your Medications Be Thinning Your Hair?

Hair thinning has become a commonly reported concern among people taking GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound. Until now, much of that shedding has been attributed to rapid changes in body weight, which can temporarily disrupt the hair growth cycle. New research, however, suggests there may be another factor involved: Some people could be genetically more vulnerable to hair loss associated with increased GLP-1 activity.

The study found that men genetically predisposed to the most common form of male pattern hair loss had an additional 7% risk associated with increased GLP-1 receptor activity. The association remained after researchers accounted for other factors related to hair loss, including high blood pressure, insulin resistance and lower testosterone. Because female hair loss is less well characterized genetically, the analysis could not establish whether the same relationship applies to women.

The findings don't prove that everyone taking a GLP-1 drug will experience hair loss, and more research is needed to determine exactly how GLP-1 activity might affect hair follicles. But if you're taking one of these medications and notice increased shedding or thinning, don't automatically assume it's only a temporary consequence of changing weight. Pay attention to what your body is telling you and discuss unexpected changes with your health care provider.
