What Are You Drinking for Your Liver?

Your liver works around the clock processing nutrients, removing waste and performing hundreds of functions that help keep you healthy. While no beverage can “detox” or cleanse your liver, staying properly hydrated helps it do its job. And water isn't your only option. Coffee, green tea, beetroot juice, coconut water and fruit-infused water may offer additional benefits while helping you stay hydrated.

Coffee has some of the strongest evidence behind it. A large 2026 study linked higher coffee intake with lower risks of cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver-related death, with benefits observed with both caffeinated and decaf varieties. Green tea provides antioxidant compounds called catechins, while beetroot juice contains compounds that may help combat inflammation and oxidative stress. Unsweetened coconut water provides electrolytes, and adding lemon, berries, cucumber, mint or other whole ingredients to water can make hydration more appealing without loading your drink with added sugar.

What you leave out of your glass matters too. Alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages can contribute to liver problems when consumed excessively, while so-called detox teas and cleanses aren't necessary and may even contain ingredients capable of harming the liver. Instead of looking for a quick cleanse, make hydration part of your everyday routine and choose unsweetened, minimally processed drinks that support your liver's own built-in ability to do its job.
