Serious liver damage can develop with few obvious warning signs. A new study of about 2,400 adults with biopsy-confirmed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, commonly known as fatty liver disease, found that about one-quarter of cirrhosis cases occurred before age 50. Those who developed advanced liver scarring earlier appeared to have a distinct combination of metabolic and inherited risk factors.
One of the biggest concerns is that cirrhosis often remains silent until serious complications develop. The study also found that nearly one-third of participants with early-onset cirrhosis had scores that would not normally trigger additional evaluation under standard screening thresholds. Type 2 diabetes, obesity and elevated genetic risk were among the factors associated with greater concern for earlier progression.
Fatty liver shouldn't be dismissed simply because you feel fine. Cirrhosis is also an important risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer, making earlier identification of advanced disease particularly important. With obesity and type 2 diabetes becoming increasingly common, protecting your metabolic health and identifying liver problems before significant scarring develops may help prevent far more serious consequences later.
