Could This Popular Drug Be Changing Your Nails?

You probably don't give your fingernails much thought until one starts looking a little unusual. But what if those changes are connected to a medication millions of people are taking? New research has raised concerns about popular GLP-1 drugs, including Ozempic and Wegovy, after finding unexpectedly high rates of nail detachment, discoloration, hair loss and scalp problems among users.

Researchers compared 575 people taking GLP-1 medications with 1,329 adults with diabetes or obesity who weren't using the drugs. Among GLP-1 users, 39% reported nail detachment, compared with just 9% of nonusers. Nail discoloration affected 46% of users versus 17% of nonusers. The concerns extended beyond fingernails, with 50% of GLP-1 users reporting unusual hair loss compared with 34% of those not taking the medications.

Even after accounting for existing skin conditions and nutritional deficiencies, nail detachment and discoloration remained approximately two to three times more common among GLP-1 users. Researchers also found that weight loss alone couldn't fully explain the differences, raising questions about other factors associated with these medications. Although the observational findings cannot establish a direct cause, they add to concerns about potential effects that extend beyond blood sugar and appetite. Anyone experiencing unusual nail, hair or scalp changes while taking these drugs should discuss them with a health care professional.
