You take thousands of breaths every day without giving them much thought. But what if changing the way you breathe could dramatically change the way you experience the world? New research suggests that intensive breathwork can produce unusual shifts in consciousness, including changes in perception, emotional experiences and even a reduced sense of self. The findings offer a glimpse into how something as familiar as breathing can influence the brain in unexpected ways.
Researchers studied 30 healthy adults experienced in intensive breathwork as they practiced a technique called circular breathing while undergoing MRI scans. At peak intensity, blood flow in the brain's gray matter dropped by approximately 45.5% compared with baseline levels, while heart and breathing rates increased. Participants also reported powerful altered experiences, including feelings of unity and changes in their sense of self. Some brain network changes appeared related to the intensity of these experiences, although those findings were preliminary.
The study suggests that changes in brain circulation and communication between brain regions may help explain why intensive breathing can produce such profound sensations. However, the small study lacked a control group, and researchers have not established whether these effects provide lasting mental health benefits. Importantly, this was an intensive breathing technique, not ordinary slow, relaxed breathing. Because rapid, deep breathing can cause dizziness, fainting and significant physiological changes, it shouldn't be treated as a risk-free exercise to try on your own.
