How to Reduce Your Risk of Cancer By 50%

I have some vital information for you that can literally save your life, save you from dying from cancer; not just from getting cancer, but from dying from it. I came across this absolutely vital information while researching my new book called, Dark Deception, info which is just too important to keep under wraps until the book's release in a year's time.

Cancer is now the number one cause of death in the country, having surpassed heart disease a few years ago.

Please check out the graph in the video that illustrates the relationship between latitude, sun exposure and death rates from cancer. Remember the vertical axis shows the number of cancer-related deaths per 100,000, while the horizontal axis indicates latitude. It clearly shows that cancer-deaths go up significantly, the farther away from the equator one lives.

Here's why. With sun exposure, UVB radiation from the sun converts cholesterol to vitamin D, one of the most potent anticancer vitamins. See the connection? Please keep your vitamin D levels in a healthy range. If you're taking oral vitamin D in cod liver oil or a supplement, you need to measure your vitamin D blood levels to avoid overdosing. Take a simple blood test to help you keep your vitamin D levels in a safe, optimal range, and go to my vitamin D testing page for more details

While in Maui this winter, I heard a number of heartbreaking stories from folks there, who told me of close relatives who either had cancer, were dying from it or had died from it. How tragic! With this new information about vitamin D in mind, I said to them, "I don't know your relative." I asked, "But did they stay in the sun? Do they have a tan?", and even though some of these people lived in Maui, it seems every one of these people did not get much sun and were pale. This was a giant clue, empirically confirming what I was learning about sun exposure.

The best and safest way to get vitamin D is from the sun. The safe way to get sun exposure is to just go out enough so that your skin turns the very lightest pink. You'll also need enough of your skin exposed to sun. Exposing only your face and hands while going from office to car is not enough for conversion into vitamin D. We must remain sensible in our approach to this issue. This means: PLEASE DON'T GET SUNBURNED!

Bear in mind unique risk factors for dark-complexioned individuals. So if you're African-American, from the Middle East or India and live in America or Europe or in a very northern latitude, you're at very high risk for developing these cancers, as high as four times the risk. Darker skin serves as a filter, causing the need for two to five times as much sunlight as someone with very pale skin.

Also be careful about using most sunblocks as they are dangerous.
If you are looking for a safe one I have researched this and recommend Active Full Spectrum Sun Block. If you can't easily find it I put it in my store for your convenience.

In light-skinned individuals, overexposure to sun can also be problematic.

Normally, skin cancer is not going to be the melanoma type, for which there are multiple causes. Follow the link below to learn more. But having sun exposure can increase the risk of other types of skin cancers, which while not as dangerous as melanoma, are easily avoided with cautious sun exposure

BOTTOM LINE: NEVER GET SUNBURNED!

Avoid commercial sun blocks, which contain toxic chemicals that enter your bloodstream through the skin, and follow the link below for more info and alternatives to these products.

If you have any questions at all about the relationship about sun and skin cancer please be sure to visit my article on that topic.

Stay informed. Have a healthy, careful, appropriate relationship with sunlight.

Might I suggest this extremely salient good advice be called: The Mercola Sunshine Law?

If animals naturally gravitate, for a limited period of time, to 'taking in the sun', why not us?

Nature knows best, not WACKO reactive models and protocol that are harmful to human health from Big Pharma.

As the lyrics go to the old 5th Dimension song: "Let The Sunshine In...".

Have to agree that we absolutely need sun! You guys should read the book recommended at www.westonaprice.org about Sunshine and Vitamin D.  Really good.  I also recommend Grandma's Lye Soap to actually prevent from burning. Don't know how it works but we like it!
We get ours from www.itspuresoap.com

I had skin cancer on my back due to all the sunburns I had all my life. I would burn in 20 minutes and the burn would take 3 weeks to heal. I would get Prickly Heat after about 5 days and that was dreadful. But after taking essential calcium along with essential minerals I no longer get sunburned even in a swimming pool in the tropics for 4 hours.

About the skin cancer; after going to the medical center, the Doctor used a little surgery to remove the growth. I went back to the center in one week to get the stitches out. They told me it was skin cancer but thought that they had got it all.

The area around the surgery remained slightly painful and after about 30 days, another tumor started just beside the surgery. I put one drop of Frankincense Oil on that tumor and the next morning it was completely gone and the pain that had been with me for a month disappeared as well. You can get this pure Frankincense Oil from www.newvision.com but I suggest you make yourself alkaline first with Organic greens which are 100,000 times more alkaline than tap water. I flavor it with essential minerals kiwi strawberry. There are also 84 minerals in ionic form in these essential minerals.

Frankincense Oil is reportedly the best remedy for any type of cancer, brain cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer. Just apply locally as close to the tumor as possible.

Researchers from Johns Hopkins report in the September, 2007 issue of the journal Cancer Cell that vitamin C can indeed help prevent cancer as has been claimed for years by a number of scientists including Linus Pauling, but it appears to do so in a different manner than that which earlier researchers proposed. While it had been believed that the well known antioxidant property of vitamin C prevented cancer by protecting DNA from free radical damage, the latest research unveils a new mechanism: that of preventing the ability of a tumor to grow in a reduced oxygen environment.

Vitamin A derivatives, known as retinoids, protect against the development of various cancers, including those of the skin, breast, and lung (Clarke N et al 2004; Khera P et al 2005). Dietary supplementation with synthetic vitamin A for 12 months in liver cancer survivors prevented recurrence of this cancer (Takai K et al 2005). In addition to preventing cancer, vitamin A derivatives have been used to cure acute promyelocytic leukemia (Clarke N et al 2004).

Clinical studies have shown that vitamin E can reduce the risk of prostate and lung cancers, particularly when used in combination with selenium supplements (Helzlsouer KJ et al 2000; Woodson K et al 1999). Regular and long-term (over 10 years) use of vitamin E reduces the risk of death from bladder cancer (Jacobs EJ et al 2002). Similarly, the use of vitamin E supplements for longer than three years slightly reduces the risk of recurrence among breast cancer survivors (Fleischauer AT et al 2003).

I read the article and was diasspointed that the video added essentially nothing...  Can I conclude from this that I can read the artricles and skip the videos???  -- Probably not, and this is frustrating to me....

 Excellent advice again Dr Mercola.

I do think that getting enough sun is difficult for most in the further northern and southern latitudes. Long commutes to work, working in artificially lit offices, perhaps with no external window, and returning home when the sun has gone down is the reality for many people in this modern world.

I would suggest that whenever people can, go outside during your tea-breaks and lunch-breaks (weather permitting). Perhaps a full spectrum light bulb in a desk lamp might be of benefit?

We’re latitude 30º here in Auckland, maybe we should be grateful for the hole in the ozone.

Dr. Mercola's previous article on this topic

Quote:
"You can NOT get vitamin D from full spectrum bulbs it has to be a bulb that produces ultraviolet radiation. UVB specially as that is what causes your skin to convert cholesterol into vitamin D."

Full-spectrum bulbs are great for a number of reasons, including the alleviation of seasonal affective disorder symptoms, but, unfortunately, not for vitamin D production.

As for your suggestion about going outside during breaks, perhaps pretend to be a smoker and take numerous smoke breaks, but actually just enjoy the sunshine? Take "sun breaks"?

Hi Cathy,
I've just returned from an amazing 3months in your beautiful country,,,and whilst there, visited your museum in Domain park.
If you do this, you will find that there is a display of sat. photos, taken over several decades, showing that there has NEVER been a hole in the ozone layer....over New Zealand!!
Interesting eh?!

Cathy, Cathy, Cathy - Look, if they're gonna take your $$, then put a whole sh*tload of toxic man-made chemicals in your blood-stream, why SHOULDN'T they block the Vitamin D forming rays and let in the dangerous ones - all at the same time? Hah??   Duane

Great post however some comment on the ability of the over 60s to be able to make enough vitamin D without supplements would be useful. I live in Australia, get plenty of sun year round but found I need 2000 I.Us in summer and 3000I.Us in winter to maintain a blood level of around 100nmols/L. Friends of my vintage who sail ,garden, drive convertible cars and are tanned all year have a similar problem. And yes we use the same testing protocol advised by Dr. Mercola.

Good points but you will want to do something about the RO water.

Nowhere on earth does de-mineralized water occur naturally.. Distillation and Reverse Osmosis Systems produce de-mineralized water with an acidic pH. Prolonged consumption of distilled or de-mineralized water can lead to mineral deficiency. Water by nature has to balance itself and when minerals are stripped from water, it causes the pH to drop and water to become acidic. It then seeks to balance itself (a basic law of nature) and does so by taking on minerals, primarily calcium. If we consume de-mineralized water, it will actually pull its “balancing minerals” from our own body.

Very bad for health.. If I were using an RO unit to filter my water I would add  Himalayan Crystal Salt to it before drinking. This will give your water life giving properties, and an abudance of minerals. I add up to 1 teaspoon per gallon, or a small pinch to a glass. I think the right amount is just below a level where you can taste salt in the water... It should just taste like smooth, soft water. I'm not completely sure if this would raise the PH enough but I suspect it would.. I'll test it and find out, I have a good ph tester at work.

Do more research:

Thanks Jeremy!  You make an excellent point and I think you are right on target. I hadn't considered that and will now start personally adding Himalayan Salt to my primary water source which I obtain from a R/O filter.

OK tested the RO water before and after the addition of Himalayan salt. Using a HACH pocket pal digital TDS meter (IP67 rated), and HACH ph paper 0-14 range. The results follow..

RO output – TDS 11ppm / PH 5

Amount of salt per gallon - approximate change in water

Add ¼ tsp Himalayan Salt -  TDS ~350ppm / PH 6

Add ½ tsp HS -  TDS 680ppm / PH 6.5

Add ¾ tsp HS -  TDS ~950 / PH >6.5

ADD 1 tsp / Gal. -  TDS = 1340   PH = 7 neutral

In my experience using 1 tsp/gal. all the time will cause the feeling of too much salt; you kind of have this weird feeling like if you drank some sea water or something.?. Water begins to taste salty - and this amount and above would only want to done on a strictly temporary basis! IMO

I find that 1/2 - 3/4 tsp/gal. is the sweet spot. Find what is best for you, but I can recommend a 1/2 tsp/gal. as the standard. I thas been said that the best waters have a TDS of between 5-700 I believe.

This post was started in response to kim's den.
Thanks for responding Dr. Mercola!

A beyond DYNAMITE article.  A must e-mail to all on your list.  I did so immediately though I had other things to do.  It was that important.

In addition, I love and have used the Sun for many other health benefits.  The Sun has been the key in curing my Eczema and what I did there was quite a discovery.  If anyone has Eczema and is interested, let me know.  I will try to check back.

Also, for every person that dies because of blame being put on the Sun, 30 people die because of not enough Sun.  Yes, the ratio of 30:1 deaths of not enough Sun versus too much.  This is one of the best articles I have read on the Sun and supports many of my other findings on the good old SUN.

ATTENTION MIRTO (& OTHERS)...
I'm interested to know what you discovered and did to cure your eczema. I have an 11 yo daughter who has been suffering from eczema. It has never been bad as having blisters or anything but the worst thing is she gets very very itchy and develops very tiny bumps when she perspires after exposure to sun or playing too much.  Her skin is also very dry and she  gets skin discoloration after exposure to sun. I've tried so many different lotions/creams/ointments to no avail. She's seeing a dermatologist but her itchiness and skin discoloration have not improved.  Any info provided will be greatly appreciated.

Mirto & KaolaBear:  I have suffered from eczema almost my entire life (36 years going on 37).  I do notice that during Spring & Summmer there is usually an improvement after being in the sun.  It seems as though I have tried everything!  This list includes Omega oils (flax-seed, fish oil, hemp seed oil, borage oil, black currant seed oil).  The next oil to try is krill oil as recommended by Dr. M.  I even tried using 100% pure coconut oil on my skin topically and developed red bumps.  Sometimes even all natural products cause me to itch (Aubrey Organics).  I am currently taking Chlorella which seems to help.  I also take Himalayan sole almost everyday.  I also started taking enzymes just in case I had a problem with fat absorption.  I would love to hear your theories.  I would say that my eczema is now under control but is by no means cured.  I feel like I have spent my last dime trying to figure out the cure to eczema.

HI LM36!... I may not be directly affected but I know how you feel.  I get so frustrated sometimes when my daughter gets the "itchy" attack as I couldn't do much about it, except give her anti-histamine tablets at worst times.  She is really stressing out over this especially if this happens when she's in school.  I've just started giving her a nutritional supplement called RELIV (which I heard helped a lot of allergy sufferers) but still yet to see any benefits from it.  Like you I tried extra virgin coconut oil on her skin but she did get the red bumps too.  Any comments welcome.

Mirto, I too have eczema and have noticed that whenever I spend some time in the sun my rashes start to clear up. I had figured it was from the vitamin D that the sun supplies.

Miro & Koala Bear, I too have noticed that my eczema clears up after being in the sun. I really think that eczema may have something to do with diet and the gastrointestinal tract. Maybe even something like Candida. I've also noticed that when I drink essiac tea, my eczema reduces a lot. Essiac tea is for intestinal detoxification, blood cleansing, and immune system support. So perhaps other detox products would help too.

Living in Canada and having had my Grandmother die from Cancer, I found this information incredibly interesting.  She never sun tanned in her life.  Died at 63.  I have also heard the link to cold climates with MS ... and know many people with it.

This is for the people with Eczema or Psoriasis.  I had a horrid rash for several years after my daughter was born.  I spent hundreds of dollars on creams that stained my clothes and sheets.  Then a friend who sold Shaklee products let me clean my house for a week.  When she came back, she mentioned that people with Psoriasis were having great relief from bathing in Basic H (only need 1/2 to 1 tsp for a bath).  I tried it that night as I felt bruised from scratching myself so badly.  I did not apply any creams after the bath (just a quick soak for maybe 5 min.).  I had 12-24 hours relief from that bath.  Within a week, all my sores were totally healed and best of all ... NO ITCH.  I have told this story to at least 40 psoriasis/eczema sufferers, and some with years of problems with hands that looked like you could almost see their bones through the sores on their hands ... and all of them had the problem clear up.  I continue to bath in Basic H as it seems a certain time of the year or if I have stress, I get a few itchy spots, and a bath fixes it almost immediately.  Its very economical and a litre lasts ages ... they claim there is nothing harmful in it.

Mirto,  Your experience confirms an article I posted six years ago.  Additionally, I have found that eczema is typically related to the foods you eat. Pasteurized dairy and wheat are the two primary culprits in my experience. Eliminating sugars and processed foods also helps.

I developed eczema much later in life (initially at age 52) and after much trial and error I discovered it was caused by an allergic reaction to a specific food, however, I did discover that tea tree oil helped the actual breakouts (on my hands). (I also took a lot of fish oil as suggested by my chiropractor). At first I used 100% tea tree oil and then went to tea tree oil in an ointment of sweet almond oil, tea tree oil and Jojoba oil that I got at a health food store. It stopped the itching and seemed to have an antiseptic effect on the actual breakouts. It worked much better than the presciption medication that I was prescribed by a dermatologist.

WoW!  Love the Vit D info.  I was diagnosed w/celiac disease last Feb., and have been gluten free for a year now.  Doc checked my Vit D (which is rare for a doc to do-you should HEAR celiac stories) and it was a 21.  He put me on Rx (50,000iu 1x/day for 8 days, 1x/mo thereafter) and Posture D 3x/day.  By July (and in the pool everyday) my LIFELONG depression was gone!

ONE of my celiac symptoms was eczema.  Hello!   I had no idea gluten from wheat, rye, barley were exacerbating my eczema because of leaky gut.  In college I worked at Blimpies and ate a sandwich a day - my eczema was horrible and I was depressed, anxiety-ridden and had to quit!  I thought it was from too much stress.  Nope.  Gluten.  I have had only one itch pustule since going gluten free:  and that was from eating too much pepperoni (nitrates).  No more eczema.  (Pregnancy also exaccerbated my eczema:  talk about doctors and creams, which never worked except to take my money and time.)

BTW Dr. Mercola, I love your NO GRAINS Diet!  lol

Dr. Mercola, thank you so much for your response on eczema.  "Pasteurized dairy and wheat are the two primary culprits in my experience. Eliminating sugars and processed foods also helps."

I have stopped pasteurized dairy milk for over 2 years as to sum it up in one word, it's junk.  Why drink something with all the enzymes gone for one and them homogenized.  Just recently stopped the pasteurized cheese, but I slip every once and a while.  Now I will stop for sure.

Try to avoid wheat, but now I must increase my effort and observe.  I watch sugars, but again slip and need more caution.  No processed foods.

Thanks for all your great data and I tell many people about your great site and email them your articles.

Part 1 of 2
To Kola Bear, LM36, Area51, Forest Cat, Healthy Glow, and others.

Thanks so much for all the information.  Got delayed in responding as I went snow skiing yesterday.

Kola Bear, the one sure thing that always works is Resinol.  I would get her on it right away as I know had she must feel.  It is messy, but it works.  Since I just discovered the Sun items late last summer, I had to resort to Resinol when it got real bad.  I experimented with Hawaiian Moon Aloe and it was very positive.  I was able to find some Sun, live around 48 degree Latitude, so have used very little of the Aloe in last 2 weeks.  Let me know how it works.  I will check back here every so often.

LM36, right on what you use.  I do some of those items for overall health reasons which I'm sure helps the eczema.  I take a lot of supplements.  Suggest at least 3 grams of a quality Vitamin C along and at least 400 I.U.s of Vitamin E with Gamma E.  I do either Carlson or Norwegian Cod Liver and Fish Oil, Barleans Flax Seed Oil, Flax Seed, eat a lot of Organic Green Salads which I usually mix in Vita-Mix for greater absorption, do Chlorella at times, and I eat no breakfast, only filtered water in glass bottle.  Reason for that is to let my body detoxify. Metabolic Body Cycles.  Digestion: (12-8PM), Assimilation: (8PM-4AM), Detoxification: (4AM-12PM).

Area51, here is one of my findings.  For all others also. Healthy People Have a Higher Content of Omega3 Oils in Their Blood  One of the significant aspects of Dr. Budwig's work is that she has discovered, (or rather rediscovered) the affinity of the human body with the sun.  If the body has the right balance of oils and proteins, it has a magnetic field, which attracts the photons in sunlight and thus is open to the healing powers of the sun.  Photons account for a great many of the physical

I suffer from eczema and psoriasis, as does my toddler daughter.  I actually found the greatest improvement (from dry, scaly skin all over her back and face to soft, beautiful skin) by stopping her vaccines

I ordered her medical file, and I charted the dates of her vaccines, sick visits, and eczema out breaks.  EVERY vaccine fit the same cycle:

vaccines
14 days later, in Dr's office for begin sick
14 days later, in Dr's office for eczema outbreak

EVERY time she got a vaccine.  I started reading about vaccines here at Dr. Mercola, and I decided to postpone her vaccines, and in about 4 months time, she has COMPLETELY cleared up.  I had tried elimination diets, herbs, creams, etc.

My question for you all about psoriasis--Mine is very localized to my scalp.  I find it difficult to treat with calendula or other topical treatments.  Any suggestions for treating the scalp?

Thank you again Dr. Mercola for this informative article!  I am a nursing mother who lives in Minnesota and we too have limited sun exposure especially in the winter months.  About a month ago I read an article regarding the increase of Vitamin D deficiancy in the north eastern states resulting in ricketts in young children.  I met with my daughters natropath pediatrician and he too explained to me how vital it is to have proper levels of vitamin D in our system.  He prescribed me Xymogen Mycelle D3 Liquid vitamin D for myself and for my two children.  We take a few drops every morning. He did say that during the winter months it is not necessary to check our vitamin D levels until spring and summer.
I was so excited to hear that this it will also help prevent and fight cancer.
Thank you again for all the wonderful education I receive from your website!

Glad you appreciate vitamin D but your approach to normalizing your levels is directly contrary to what I am actually recommending.  Oral vitamin D can be dangerous and should NOT be taken unmonitored. I strongly disagree with your naturopath who is simply uninformed on this issue and I doubt has monitored all his patients, as I have, that were placed on vitamin D.

The best approach is to let your body make the vitamin D, not take it orally. If, like most people, you can't arrange to get regular doses of sun in the winter, then consider a safe tanning booth or purchasing a sunlamp.

If you decide to take the simple approach then please be a bit more aggressive in your monitoring. The problem with ORAL vitamin D is that once you overdose it is TOO late, you might have toxic levels for months or longer.  To not test sooner is very unwise.

Additionally, if your levels are very low you may want to take a larger dose then the one you are on. The beauty of sunlight or phototherapy though is that the ONLY thing you need to be careful of is avoiding getting a burn. Your body automatically adjusts the dose with amazing precision through complex feedback loops.

Dr Mercola or nyone, what is a "safe" tanning bed?  Could I find one at a local tanning center or is this something I would have to purchase for myself?  Any information would be appreciated!  Thank-you!
