Future Robots -- The Singularity is Expected to Arrive in 13 Years

A singularity is a term that happens when the exponential growth in technology reaches a point where the consequences are completely unknown.

The AI pioneer, mathematician and author Vernor Vinge estimates that one such singularity will occur by the year 2020, and that the cause will be the creation of robots "who surpass humans in every intellectual and creative dimension."

He believes that this development is the most likely non-catastrophic outcome in the next few decades. What happens beyond that singularity, Vinge says, will be profound and unimaginable.

In the meantime, Vinge believes we'll see many more mobile robots than ever before, including ones that are equipped to be more agile and coordinated than human athletes could ever hope to be, even in open field situations.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics certainly offer some exciting developments. The question is, though, how both will affect our world in the future.

Seems like you won't have long to wait, according to the linked interview with Vernor Vinge. Not surprising, when you consider that businesses like Honda and Sony are already working toward making robots a ubiquitous presence in our lives.

Even more exciting to me is his notion that governmental abuses in their present form -- especially those that harm your health like the Vioxx debacle -- may disappear, thanks to the empowerment and freedom technology brings, via online networks, online databases, social networks and Web sites like Mercola.com.

All of these advantages brought about by growth of the Internet will serve to make people -- fueled by deep knowledge -- more resourceful, vigilant and diverse than any government could ever be.

I really believe that the powers currently in control of the world are not expecting the amazing forces that are being unleashed, especially with the Internet. I  remain confident that sites like Mercola.com will be instrumental in educating the masses about simple, practical and inexpensive tools that allow people like you to Take Control of Your Health.

I don’t think that any AI guru can claim the in just 13 years they will have developed a robot/computer that will “surpass humans in every intellectual and creative dimension”. At present we understand practically nothing about the human brain – when you crack somebody’s head open you can’t isolate thoughts or feelings. And what about the soul? We are greater than the sum of our parts.

Keep a space for me in that tunnel anyway – just in case!

Creativity is an element in itself.  Machine or not it's a on a plain of it's own.  Ai may have the advantage, this I could agree, seeing that it hasn't had lifetimes of advertisements and political or scientific garbage to debilitate it's mind, but the laws of nature cannot be broken.  Ai minds will work the same as  humans in that it will only perform in the way in which it is programed, You could consiter it a child born into the world with the highest levels of mathamatics alreay hotwired into it brain.  So what if somone be it religious, facist, a governement or an anarchist were to manage to slip a line of code into it for there own gain.  It's a scary thought.  Will these machines readily question there own programming to correct it's own programmed imperfections?
There's a mistake I see our race, in terms of science, make frequently is that though we may have to cabality to create, that is not where we have any doubt, but we never seem to consider if we SHOULD do these things. I think of Jurasic Park... lol a classic example.  I truely hope that Ai has that consiousness to help correct the problems plagueing our race and I hope that technoligies newly found self-consciousness will allow it not to fall prey to a worlds incessant attempts to control it's people.  Until then I'll look for a nice cozey cave to escape a possible terrifiying future.  Good speed!!!

For all of those out there who are a bit of a Luddite like me:

Church sign reads:

Artificial intelligence cannot outperform human stupidity.

Amen.

Reesacat- great sign! I had to look "Luddite" up in the dictionary; I thought it was a religion. Thank you.
I was once a skilled journeyman myself, but now my skills are obsolete. Luckily for me, I was young when computers replaced us but many of the other hundreds of thousands of affected people were not so fortunate.
It's a mixed bag for sure.

Indeed!

The internet, and the many technological advances, you sight  Dr. Mercola, are THE EQUALIZER...

Let there be light & truth!

A movie recommendation on the subject of information manipulation, directed by Robert DeNiro, worth your consideration, is: 'The Good Shepherd'....regarding the OSS, early CIA and NSA.

Katy - of course you can join us! We don't think of it as hiding though, more like escaping.
(I can't help reading your name as Katy Bear, even before you said you lived with grizzlies) ;-)

I want in the tunnel, too! Just like in the Terminator movies; if and when the machines become self-aware, and realize they are smarter than us, they may decide that we are a liability, or unfit to look after the earth. (Cue the creepy music.)

GammaGirl,

Okay I'm good to go. Got some glow-in-the-dark bananas (from a greenhouse near our local nuclear power plant), can't find any low-cal sweetener in my cupboards, got the solar-powered laptop, but where's the light in the tunnel (at the end?), wasabi sets my brain on fire (am I the only one?) but I'll bring it if you want it, got a stash of Himalayan crystal salt (from this site), and what is digware (Teflon makes me nervous)? I'll bring some full-spectrum bulbs so we don't get depressed after days of sunlight deprivation. Many mason jars full of RO water, and a pasture-fed Jersey cow to carry the load, and provide some sweet milk. And a canary, for air quality control. Anything else?

Hey GammaGirl,

I think the day I resort to a tinfoil hat to protect my brain it'll be too late already, although it was one of the biggest laugh-getters in the movie Signs (was that the reference?). Perhaps some spots in the tunnel could be offered up on E-Bay, might be interesting.

Back to the subject at hand, I don't know if computers will ever achieve what we experience as consciousness or self-awareness. I hope not. Even if they were programmed with the directive to do what is good for the planet, that might not be good news for humans. Then include the likelihood of hackers or programmers with malicious intent. What are the directions to that tunnel again?
