Drink Soda and Damage Your DNA

Research from a British university suggests that sodium benzoate, a common preservative found in many soft drinks, has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA.

This could eventually lead to diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's.

When a UK professor of molecular biology and biotechnology tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells, he discovered that it was damaging important DNA in the cells' mitochondria.

Mitochondria serve as the "power stations" for cells, and damage to them can lead to serious cell malfunctions associated with aging and age-related disease. The damage caused by sodium benzoate was great enough to cause the mitochondria to stop functioning.

Sodium benzoate occurs naturally in berries in small amounts, but is used in large quantities to prevent mold in soft drinks such as Sprite, Diet Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

I am still shocked every time I reflect on the fact that the number one source of calories in America comes from soda. To me it is an absolutely mind-boggling fact. Of course, all I have to do to knock my senses back to reality is go to a standard grocery store on a busy weekend and see what people are stuffing in their shopping carts.

We clearly have a long way to go to share even the most fundamental, basic nutrition concepts to the typical highly deceived and manipulated consumer. This new danger from sodium benzoate is simply one among many, as sodas are among the worst possible "foods" you can consume.

Professor Peter Piper, the UK expert who discovered the problem, says that the soft drink preservative can "totally inactivate" and "knock out" cells' mitochondria. The end result is an increased risk of a slew of diseases.

Sodium benzoate has previously also come under fire because, when combined with the vitamin C in many soft drinks, it forms benzene, a cancer-causing chemical linked to leukemia. In one study, at least five brands of soft drinks were found to contain excessive benzene levels.

Sodium benzoate is used freely in the United States and the UK. Fortunately, you can protect your health from this dangerous substance by not drinking soda (and
not allowing your kids to either).

This is one of the easiest -- and most significant -- things you can do for your health; and aside from the good news that you won't have to worry about damaging your DNA, giving up soda (if you drink it) can reduce your risk of diabetes, obesity, and cancer. If you struggle with an addiction to soda, I strongly recommend you consider Turbo Tapping as a simple yet highly effective tool to help you stop this health-sucking habit.

So put down the can of soda, and pick up a glass of clean water instead.

Great article! I just saw a baby, yes a baby, today holding a bottle full of coke!!!!! The bottle actually had a coke label on it as well!!!

Another think about soda, most have about 17 teaspoons of sugar in them. It takes 1 tsp to inhibit the immune system for up to 4 hrs!! You can do the math on how many kids eat and drink sugar, how long they have a weakened immune system and why kids these days are getting sicker and sicker.

Hello, ozy ness!  I bet your co-workers have health issues, probably
the ones with the most drink the most diet sodas.

I have a good friend who wanted to lose weight.  She started on
Splenda (sucralose) and in a week had high blood pressure,
blood in the urine (no infection) and severe muscle spasms.
Stopped Splenda, it went away in 72 hours.

This is so sad.....yet not suprising. I knew a couple several years ago, we were just of age. They had a son, and at 4 months old they were putting Mountain Dew in his bottle. They would shake it up to make it flat then give it to him.  I was horrified! Even at 18 I knew that was terrible for a baby. I lost touch with them when I moved, and the little boy was 2. I have often wondered about his health since then.....

Hello ozy ness!  My husband is one of those..... two cups of coffee (OK by me) then soda all day (not OK by me) then his near beer in the evening - (some is OK by me, he's a dry alcoholic).  I have finally gotten him to drink some tea during the day,(mainly because he wants to save money!!)  so his soda is cut back. (to sweeten the tea, I use a little sugar and stevia)  So, we are making some progress though I would like for him to drink water. He rarely does get any water - he would rather have gatorade. I get exasperated with him because I know he wants to be healthier, yet I have some understanding - he was a severe alcoholic (beer was his choice) so we are dealing with the addiction tendency. Slowly but surely.......

Those children are drinking the soda because it *is* tasty (who could argue) and because parents have given them access.  I actually make a soda-like drink -- a fermented beverage -- that my son drinks.  It actually has nutrient value.  :)  Homemade soda technique

I powered my way through grad school on soda and coffee.  I paid for it later.  Decisions like that have a way of catching up to you.

Josh, please post any links you might have to support this statement, "It takes 1 tsp to inhibit the immune system for up to 4 hrs!!"

Combine that with high fructose corn syrup and you've got a wonderful cocktail. They should add a bit of plutonium also as a twist. To my surprise this story was exposed on Fox News yesterday, never thought I'd see that. Coke and Pepsi must not be a heavy sponsor for them as those were the soft drinks they featured.

Jimmy,
Totally!!!  High fructose corn syrup is an awful poison IMO and everything including bread and even things not requiring sweetener have it.  I can only hope that people come to realize these chemical cocktails are the bane of our existence.  And the only reason to use them is to lower costs, boost profits and extend shelf life.  Yuck.

Sodium benzoate is one bad dude. I try to avoid it as much as possible. One should also avoid the yellow dye # 5 they put in mountian dew--especially if you are a man. It shrinks tissue, especially the male u-know!

What about Potassium Benzonate?? That's what is in Diet Pepsi - which my husband drinks at least 48oz a day - that's 4 cans for those of us who aren't fast with math :-)  Between the Aspertame and Postassium Benzonate who knows what  "disease" will get him.

Katie,
I would do whatever you must to get your husband off that diet poison. My 26 year old sister had a brain tumor from that stuff.  It's not something to mess around with. My father had a detached retina from it and my mom has "lupus" from it.  Then my mom's friend has lupus and MS, but I think its from all the diet soda!

Thankfully I got off that poison and did a detox, but I still have to wonder if something will creep up on me when I get older.

I agree with you there Katy,  soda just makes people fat with all that sugar and calories.  I just drink water now with real lemon and it's a good cleanse for the liver.

I add a sprig of fresh mint from my garden with the lemon slice to my
water.  I give that to guests and they love it.

Submitted for my fellow Vital Voters' approval, under today's Congressional Lobbying post article, is a modest proposal for a new brand called: BS-ESTA (TM)....

Just when you thought the soda shelves were not safe, your Uncle Sam and Big Pharma are coming to your rescue....
