The Weston A. Price Foundation has warned the U.S. FDA that plans for salt restriction pose a health threat to all Americans. Neither history nor scientific evidence supports the notion that salt consumption should be reduced.
Research has shown that any intake less than about one and one-half teaspoons of salt per day triggers a cascade of hormones to recuperate sodium from the waste stream. These hormones can make you more vulnerable to heart disease and kidney problems. The FDA and USDA are attempting to mandate a drastically restricted sodium consumption of about half a teaspoon per day.

“[Weston A. Price Foundation] testimony noted that salt plays a critical role in body physiology and brain function. In the elderly, lack of salt is associated with increased hip fractures and cognitive decline; low salt diets in growing children predisposes to poor neurological development.”
