Turmeric May Boost Memory and Uplift Mood

A new study adds to a growing body of information crediting turmeric with important health benefits. The latest study, reported by NDTV, shows that curcumin — the principal curcuminoid of turmeric — may boost your memory and lift your mood. Study subjects who reported mild memory problems and who took curcumin twice daily for 18 months showed improved memory scores by 28 percent.

Turmeric is truly a spice that spices up your life. From lessening the effects of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s to protecting against pain and immobility of arthritis, to having anticancer functions, turmeric and curcumin have been gaining recognition for being good for your health with each passing year — and the good news is it’s not only easy to obtain in a variety of ways, but you can even grow it yourself.

One way to take turmeric is through a supplement, but the best and most refreshing way to get it is to use it in food preparation, or make your own turmeric tea or milk. This spice can be added to numerous recipes to boost both the flavor and the nutritional content, but one of the easiest ways to add turmeric into your diet is by brewing turmeric tea and drinking it once or twice a day. Turmeric is available in the market as fresh root, turmeric tea bags or as powder, all of which can be used to brew tea. You can opt to use fresh turmeric root to extract as much nutrients as you can.

But if you want a truly fresh turmeric, why not try growing it? It’s a tropical plant, but if you live in a northern climate, you can grow it inside quite easily. I experimented with growing turmeric and planted a pound last year. This year I have a virtual turmeric forest that even flowered. Now I can have fresh turmeric at my fingertips year-round.
