A common drug used to fight malaria is being rolled out in New York, with 4,000 patients receiving hydroxychloroquine in rounds of four- or 10-day doses. Also notable is that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is bankrolling a different trial of the drug, to see if it can block coronavirus transmission.[i]
While New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the drug would be used in combination with the antibiotic Zithromax, or azithromycin, in “last-ditch” cases, there was no indication whether the same would be true in the upcoming trials.
In other news, a doctor in Los Angeles reported that he had tremendous success with his patients by paring the drug with zinc, which “opens a channel for the zinc to enter the cell and block virus replication.”[ii] Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci, of the National Institutes of Health, downplayed the drug’s promise, saying findings so far were “anecdotal.”
