Plans by Apple and Google to roll out contact tracing phone apps for COVID-19 (and probably other future uses) is a pie-in-the-sky idea that won’t work in the U.S., according to IT officials.
For one thing, not everyone has a smartphone and for another, about half of those who do told The Washington Post they wouldn’t opt in, due to privacy concerns. On top of that, lots of people share one phone, so tracking and tracing it wouldn’t necessarily identify the correct person to contact if they were found to be around someone who is infected.
