South Korea is far ahead of the U.S. and many other countries in the current battle against COVID-19 due to its widespread testing, contact tracing and public disclosure of cases — measures that have proven more effective at reducing deaths and preserving economic stability than broader shelter-in-place or shutdown orders.
Public alerts show the infected person’s age, gender and a detailed log of their movements, which Korean officials admit infringes upon privacy of the affected individuals, but they argue it helps the elderly more effectively target social distancing and, in turn, saves more lives.
