The National Institutes of health, which “rarely claims
ownership or pursues patent rights,” appears to want a slice of Moderna’s
coronavirus vaccine money pie, if the company is successful in finding a
vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, according to documents obtained by Axios.
Because the federal employees assigned their rights to the
U.S. government, that gives the NIH and the government a personal stake in any
financial gains the vaccine might produce. Even so, NIH director Francis
Collins said he hasn’t heard anyone say yet that the vaccine would be a
money-maker, and that they’re only looking to recoup their costs and “maybe
make a tiny percentage of increase of profit over that.”
