A group of scientists who believe the coronavirus can spread farther than what was initially believed has convinced the World Health Organization to review new evidence on it, after the scientists asked them to do so in an open letter in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
The scientists said the virus can stay in the air longer, and travel farther, than the WHO thinks, and if it can, that means “crowded, closed, poorly ventilated settings, cannot be ruled out,” as vectors for disease spread. At first, the WHO had resisted revising its opinion. Scientists told The New York Times, “We are very glad that W.H.O. has finally acknowledged the accumulating evidence, and will add aerosol transmission indoors to the likely modes of transmission.”
