DC, Several States Expand Mask Rules; Some Come With Criminal Penalties for Noncompliance

coronavirus

Washington, D.C., Indiana, Texas and other states are buckling down and expanding rules for mask-wearing, with some even threatening criminal penalties for going out in public without one. In D.C., going without a mask could cost you a $1,000 fine — with exemptions for anyone under age 3, or if you are eating, drinking, exercising or working alone in an enclosed office.

In Indiana, you can be charged with a Class B misdemeanor, up to $1,000 in fines and jail for not wearing a mask. Exceptions are for those under age 8 or if you have medical issues or are eating or drinking.

In Texas, the rule applies to anyone age 10 and above, with exceptions for those with a medical condition or disability. Anyone driving, swimming or exercising outdoors is also exempted; a special temporary exemption is also in place for anyone who is voting, working as a poll watcher or working as an assistant at the polls. Fines for noncompliance cap out at $250.

July 22, 2020, Ohio’s governor ordered statewide mask-wearing, too, but made exceptions for those who are actively exercising or playing sports, officiants at religious services, those in public safety and those actively eating or drinking.
