When Oakland University, north of metro Detroit, Michigan,
decided to ask students and staff to wear “Bio-Buttons” to track their health
and location, students protested — and won. Originally, it sounded like the
buttons, which are worn on your body to track vital signs such as temperature
and heart rate, would be mandated.
The buttons would have been linked to students’ smartphones.
But after students organized a protest citing privacy concerns, the university
quickly changed gears and announced that as of August 4, 2020, the buttons
would be optional.
The university also took down a webpage on its website that
had said the button “will be used in conjunction with the daily health
assessment to determine if you are able to participate in campus activities.”
