Within a week of opening, schools in Cherokee County, Georgia,
had already quarantined 1,193 students and staff members who tested positive
for coronavirus. At least two high schools decided to close until the end of
August, due to the positive tests.
The numbers drew angry criticisms from family members and
school staff, some of whom said they thought the schools had been premature in
opening to in-person learning.
In contrast, Trine University in northeast Indiana, which
decided to open both in-person and online, reported that more than 99% of its
1,142 student athletes tested negative. The nine students who were positive
were asymptomatic, but were still asked to quarantine as per protocols the
university planning team developed when they decided to physically open the
doors for the fall semester.
