After signing a deal with vaccine maker AstraZeneca to
produce a COVID-19 vaccine, Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the
vaccine should be “as mandatory as you can possibly make it” for all
Australians when it becomes available.
Calling it “the ticket to get back to some sort of normal,”
Morrison said “anti-vaxxers” need to quit thinking of only themselves and get
the shot for the good of everyone.
The deal made headline news because it’s
coronavirus-related, but deep in the same news story, Morrison said it’s also
important to “identify other potential vaccine projects that Australia can
partner with.”
In the meantime, AstraZeneca’s president Liz Chatwin said
“there is no guarantee” the COVID-19 vaccine will protect against the disease.
The Australian noted that more than 160 vaccines are in development currently,
with 30 of them in human trials.
