The news may be full of talk about deaths from coronavirus,
but a different fallout from the pandemic is only just beginning to gain
attention — and that is what all of the layoffs, job losses and related
financial problems are doing to the state of mental health in the population.
Coupled with the isolation of the lockdown, the pandemic is
unraveling the U.S. social fabric as more and more people become so distraught
that they are increasingly considering suicide. Just in people ages 18 to 24,
the CDC reported that 1 in every 4 persons had seriously considered suicide in
the past 30 days — but all age groups are affected.
These statistics are alarming enough on their own, but other
data from insurance companies show that the mental health crisis is so real
that a significant number of people are filing claims related to major
depression. It’s a sign of mental and spiritual deprivation that is so severe
it is hard to predict what the final outcome will be.
